However, El Mundo report Real Madrid have attempted to sign Messi on three occasions — with a proposal from four-and-a-half years ago being the closest they came to talks.

Back in 2013, Barcelona’s era of dominance looked to be coming to an end after the Catalans were taken apart 7-0 by Bayern Munich on aggregate in the Champions League semi-finals.

The Argentine’s former lawyer Inigo Suarez informed his father Jorge that Real Madrid were willing to meet his £222m buy-out clause.

And would offer a seven-year contract worth £400,000-a-week NET — as well as around £890,000 for his father.
