Virgil van Dijk: Liverpool debut was a dream come true

Virgil van Dijk said scoring the winner on his Liverpool debut was a dream come true as his header proved to be difference in his new club's 2-1 FA Cup win over Everton on Friday.

Van Dijk, who just completed his protracted move from Southampton this week, rose highest to restore Liverpool's lead in the 84th minute at Anfield.

"What a night," he told the BBC after the game. "It was thoroughly deserved. It felt amazing to be out there and playing with these guys. The goal is very special for me and my family.

Asked if the performance was a dream come true, he added: "Yeah, definitely. Playing at Anfield for Liverpool is a dream for every player. To score a goal is even more special."

James Milner, who opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the first half before Gylfi Sigurdsson equalised for Everton after the break, praised his new teammate for coming directly into the squad and providing the needed boost.

"It's not an easy game to step into but it's the sort of game Van Dijk came here to play in," Milner said. "They had a lot of fans in which was great and made a great atmosphere but that's what we expect from him."
