ARSENAL are closing in on the £17.5m signing of Borussia Dortmund ace Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

The Greek defender is out of contract in 12-months, and the German giants are set to cash in this summer.

The Gunners are thought to be edging out other European rivals with the help of new head of recruitment Sven Mislintat.

The ex-Dortmund chief has close ties with Papastathopoulos’ agent Konstantinos Farras, according to Bild.

It is understood Arsenal are looking to bring in at least three new first-team players this summer.

A goalkeeper, centre-back and central midfielder are the prime targets, as the Gunners rebuild again.

Arsene Wenger is leaving the North London side after 22-years in charge this summer.

The Frenchman has been offered the chance to become the highest paid manager in the world in China.

It will dwarf his £8m-a-year deal at the Gunners, and that of Pep Guardiola who is on £16m-a-year at Manchester City.

Batshuayi, 24, scored nine goals for the Bundesliga outfit before his stint was abruptly ended due to damaging his ankle ligament.

He now faces a race against time to be fit for his country in Russia this summer.

But he appears to be doing everything possible to make it to the showpiece judging by his latest Instagram video.

Batshuayi was in the pool at Chelsea‘s training ground, which is fitted with a hydrotherapy treadmill, incline and video-recording capabilities.

Arsene Wenger was SACKED by Arsenal and does not want to leave the club he loves after 22 years

Arsene Wenger was SACKED by Arsenal and does not want to leave the club he loves after 22 years

ARSENE WENGER was sacked by Arsenal after losing the support of owner Stan Kroenke.

SunSport can reveal that Wenger does not want to leave the club he loves and has been forced out under pressure from the US owners.

Arsenal announced his departure yesterday morning and have agreed to pay him £11million — the final year of his salary — as severance when he leaves this summer.

The Gunners are desperate to get back into the Champions League and hope the announcement will galvanise disaffected fans before their Europa League semi-final against Atletico Madrid.

Club board members and Wenger were all singing from the same sheet yesterday.

Chief executive Ivan Gazidis heaped praise on Wenger for his incredible 22-year service which delivered three titles, seven FA Cups and that amazing Invincibles season in 2003/2004.

Gazidis would not be drawn on the conversations which led to the Frenchman’s imminent departure.

But Wenger, 68, is understood to be unhappy and frustrated at both the speed and timing of the departure with a Champions League place via the Europa League still up for grabs.

A carefully-worded statement was released by Arsenal and Wenger hours before Gazidis spoke.

In it, Wenger said: “After careful consideration and following discussions with the club, I feel it is the right time for me to step down at the end of the season.

“I am grateful for having had the privilege to serve the club for so many memorable years.

“I managed the club with full commitment and integrity.

“I want to thank the staff, the players, the directors and the fans who make this club so special.”

Gazidis said: “The decision had to happen at some point.

“I don’t think the club has ever been better prepared for it. Now it’s time to look forward. He leaves us in a very strong position to look forward.”

Wenger called his staff early yesterday morning to inform them of the decision and the players were called into training early.

A meeting at 9.45am was the first that Gunners stars knew of the decision, just two days before their clash with West Ham on Sunday.

The ‘Wenger Out’ section of the Gunners fans finally got their way but Arsenal still have important games to come as the manager will be desperate to end by delivering Champions League football again.

He added: “I urge our fans to stand behind the team to finish on a high. To all the Arsenal lovers take care of the values of the club. My love and support forever.”

It left current and ex players delivering fitting tributes to the club’s long-serving manager as fans were split on his departure.

Wenger is understood to not want to retire and is likely to open talks with French clubs PSG and his former club Monaco over next season.

My View - Ian Wright

ARSENE WENGER is a man of principle, honesty and integrity – that is why I am convinced he has been sacked and not resigned.

For all the vitriol and abuse thrown at him, Arsene has never been a man to walk out before the end of a contract.

It is a sad situation that it’s come to this and I don’t suppose we will ever find out who is responsible, because they will hide behind each other.

One day he is doing a Press conference with no hint of this – the next he’s gone. It doesn’t add up.

But Arsene can go with his head high. That’s why, whatever the results, it is imperative he gets the send-off a true Arsenal and football legend deserves. We all owe him so much.

A director of football role could be available at PSG, due to Wenger’s relationship with the Qatari family who own the Ligue One outfit.

Arsenal are now searching for a successor after bringing Wenger’s 22-year association with Arsenal to a close.

Juventus chief Max Allegri remains a top target and they have already spoken with former Barcelona chief Luis Enrique.

Brendan Rodgers wants the job and Celtic last night stated they would allow their manager to talk to Arsenal if the call came.

Manchester City's run to Premier League crown down to chemistry
Pep Guardiola delves into his high standards for his Man City players in training, when in possession and their decision making. Joleon Lescott talks about Manchester City's new generation and what to expect from Pep Guardiola in the coming seasons. This is Manchester City's third Premier League title, yet it's the first time they've won it by playing properly as a team. Previous incarnations of City have been unquestionably successful and memorable for the manner of their title victories, but were also marred by a culture of superstars before teamwork. Pep Guardiola has overhauled that version of City and created a genuinely harmonious, cohesive side who can be considered on a different planet to the title winners of 2011-12 and 2013-14. The...

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock sweating on Aron Gunnarsson’s future… as four Turkish clubs eye up free transfer

NEIL WARNOCK is sweating on Aron Gunnarsson’s future – with Besiktas among the clubs looking to land him on a free transfer this summer.

The Cardiff midfielder’s contract expires at the end of the season and he has attracted interest from foreign clubs.

Besiktas are among FOUR clubs in Turkey looking at snapping up the Iceland captain, who skippered his country to their famous win over England two years ago.

But they face competition from AEK and Olympiacos in Greece, while Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia and American clubs in the MLS have registered interest.

They are willing to match the £40,000-a-week salary Gunnarsson would command in the Premier League if Cardiff seal promotion.

And finding a replacement for the central midfielder would give Warnock a massive headache.

How can Manchester City win the title against Manchester United on Saturday?

Football news - transfers, fixtures, scores, pictures | The Sun
How can Manchester City win the title against Manchester United on Saturday?

SO this is it… the weekend when runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City can actually clinch the title.

It seems like Pep Guardiola’s rampant side have been in full control of their own destiny for months now.

Manchester City celebrate their victory at Old Trafford earlier in the seasonTwitter @LeroySane19

Such has been their control of the championship race it’s long been inevitable that City will clinch their third Premier crown in six years.

It will be their first triumph under Guardiola, who will add the honour to his table-topping achievements in La Liga with Barcelona and the Budesliga with Bayern Munich.

So tell me what can happen this weekend

Victory over neighbours United at the Etihad would mean City are definitely champions.

Manuel Pellegini lead City to the Premier League title in 2011/12PA:Empics Sport And Robert Mancini followed up with another title win in 2013/2014Times Newspapers Ltd

It would mean the Citizens would be on 87 points and United could only reach 86.

City would also surpass the maximum points totals possible for both Liverpool (84) and Spurs (85).

But if they draw or lose, the issue starts to get complicated.

What do you mean? What happens if City and United draw?

A point apiece would see City on 85 points and United on 69. That would be enough to put Liverpool out of it and also mean that a City win at Spurs the following week would clinch the championship.

Anything less than a win at Spurs, coupled with a United victory over West Bromwich the following day, would mean the Blues still need either two or three points to secure the title.

Pep Guardiola can add the Premier League to his La Liga and Bundesliga titles with victory over Manchester UnitedBongarts - Getty

THE PREMIER LEAGUE – HOW THE TOP TEAMS STAND

And what about if United win on Saturday?

This would mean City could not clinch the title at Wembley the following week because would still need six points to surpass United’s maximum possible points total of 89.

But if City beat Spurs and the United somehow slip up and draw with West Bromwich 24 hours later and draw, City would still need a point to mathematically claim the crown.

If United lose to the bottom club, City would win the title without playing again.

If City do bag the trophy with a win over United, how significant will their achievement be?

City will become the first side in Premier League history to clinch the title with five games to spare.

United, twice in 1999/00 and 2012/13, and Arsenal in 2003/04 completed title victories with four games to go.
