Unai Emery announced as Arsenal head coach as fans shocked at new job title

UNAI EMERY’S appointment as head coach and not manager has not gone unnoticed by fans.

The Spaniard, 46, was today announced as Arsene Wenger’s replacement.

But unlike the long-serving Frenchman, he will not have complete control over every detail at the Emirates.

One fan was seeking clarity of the role as Arsenal appear to have had a shake up within the club’s hierarchy.

What’s this new head coach title they’re giving Emery tho? Is he the manager or no? I’m confused.

— Salva (@DemTinSom) May 23, 2018

Pretty interesting that Arsenal have brought Unai Emery in as head coach and not manager. They really just needed someone who only looks after the team and not transfers, because the club is dead on money.

How old is Michael Oliver and has Gianluigi Buffon apologised after claiming 2018 FA Cup final referee has ‘a trash can where his heart should be’?

How old is Michael Oliver and has Gianluigi Buffon apologised after claiming 2018 FA Cup final referee has ‘a trash can where his heart should be’?

MICHAEL OLIVER is set to take charge of the FA Cup final between Manchester United and Chelsea.

The Premier League referee has made himself known on the world stage this season after incurring the wrath of legendary Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

Michael Oliver will referee this year’s FA Cup final between Manchester United and ChelseaREUTERS

Michael Oliver awarded a stoppage time penalty to Real Madrid after Juve had drawn level from 3-0 down, and then sent off the 40-year-old for his protests.

Here is all you need to know about one of English football’s top referees.

Who is Michael Oliver and how old is he?

Michael Oliver was born in Ashington, Northumberland, and introduced to refereeing by his father at the age of 14.

In 2007, he became the youngest referee ever to officiate at Wembley Stadium when he took charge of the Conference National play-off final.

In 2009, his father Clive took charge of the League Two final before he refereed the League One play-off final a day later.

He has spent two years refereeing in European competition with his first match coming in 2016 between Sporting Lisbon and Legia Warsaw.

Oliver is currently 33 years old.

What happened when Michael Oliver refereed Real Madrid vs Juventus?

Juventus travelled to the Bernabeu trailing 3-0 from the first leg in Turin, but Blaise Matuidi drew the scores level on aggregate after a first half double from Mario Mandzukic.

In stoppage time, Oliver adjudged Juve’s Medhi Benatia to have brought down Lucas Vazquez in the area and awarded a penalty to Real Madrid.

Led by Buffon, Juventus players swarmed around the English official, who would ultimately show the goalkeeper a red card.

Cristiano Ronaldo then converted the penalty against substitute goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny to send Real into the semi-finals.

Michael Oliver sent off Gianluigi Buffon after he was surrounded by furious Juventus players following the award of a last minute penalty to Real MadridAP:Associated Press What exactly did Buffon say about Michael Oliver?

Following the match, Buffon said of Oliver: “It was a tenth of a penalty. I know the referee saw, it was certainly a dubious incident.

“And a dubious incident at the 93rd minute when we had a clear penalty denied [for a challenge on Juan Cuadrado] in the first leg, you cannot award that at this point.

“The team gave their all, but a human being cannot destroy dreams like that at the end of an extraordinary comeback on a dubious situation.

“The referee has a trashcan where his heart should be.

“On top of that, if you don’t have the character to walk on a pitch like this in a stadium like this, you can sit in the stands with your wife, your kids, drinking your Sprite and eating crisps.

“You cannot ruin the dreams of a team.”

Speaking on Spanish radio, the legendary Italian added: “You have to be a murderer to make the last two decisions the referee made.

“Real Madrid deserved to go through over the two legs.

“I wish them the best and it has always been an honour for me to face this club, but objectively we at least deserved to go to extra time.

“We started out knowing full well we had 0.0000005 per cent chance of doing it.

“But I am so truly proud to be part of a team that would play like this, work so hard and give everything. I am proud to be with this group of men. Naturally, there is regret and, well, anger.”

Buffon was charged by Uefa for his comments.

Has Gianluigi Buffon apologised to Michael Oliver?

Buffon has, this week, apologised to Michael Oliver for his reaction to the incident which occurred in March.

He said: “If I saw the referee again, I would give him a hug and say that he should have taken more time with that decision.

“With the feelings, emotions and disappointment of the situation, I behaved in a way that was not usual for me.

“After that match, I went beyond the limits with the things I said about the referee and I apologise for that.”

This came as Michael Oliver’s wife revealed some of the vile abuse the referee had received from social media trolls following that Champions League quarter-final.

Liverpool fans set to have all eyes on RB Leipzig today… as their performance in Bundesliga season finale could cost them an extra £11million to land Naby Keita

LIVERPOOL fans will want to keep all eyes on RB Leipzig today.

After all, their performance in their Bundesliga season finale could cost them an extra £11million to land Naby Keita.

Liverpool will be sweating about Naby Keita's transfer fee on SaturdayLiverpool will be sweating about Naby Keita’s transfer fee on SaturdayAP:Associated Press

Jurgen Klopp agreed to pay £48m for the Guinean star last summer, on the basis that he would join in July 2018.

However, that fee will rise to £52.75m if Leipzig get into the Europa League.

The transfer fee for Keita, 23, then becomes a whopping £59m if they qualify for the Champions League.

As things stand, going into the final game of the season, incredibly, all three scenarios are still possible.

BUNDESLIGA TABLE – AS THINGS STAND

The top four in the Bundesliga will gain Champions League qualification, while fifth and sixth go into the Europa League draw.

At present, Leipzig sit precariously positioned in sixth on 50 points from their 33 games – just one point above seventh, two above eighth and three above ninth.

Results today therefore could see them spiral well down the league standings into mid-table mediocrity.

Conversely though, a win could see them go as high as fourth – should Hoffenheim and Bayer Leverkusen lose.

Should Leipzig hold up their end of the bargain and beat Hertha Berlin today in their 2.30pm kick-off, the most likely scenario would be a Europa League berth.

That would still force Liverpool into shelling out around £5m – with the Reds hopeful tenth-placed Hertha Berlin can spring a surprise.

Keita has been a key cog for Leipzig this season, turning out 38 times and scoring nine goals.

However, his disciplinary record will be a concern for Klopp and Co, as he has seen red FOUR times in 2017-18 in all competitions – including one for Guinea.

The interesting new jersey will set fans back £64.95 for a “Stadium Home” version – or a jaw-dropping £89.95 for a “Vapor Match” edition.

The more expensive option is said to be the “authentic” option, made with Nike VaporKnit technology and is “the same shirt worn by the pros”.

How old is Sir Alex Ferguson, what is his condition following brain haemorrhage surgery, and who is Manchester United legend’s wife Cathy?

THE FOOTBALL world was stunned on Saturday night by the news Sir Alex Ferguson had been rushed to hospital.

The legendary former Manchester United boss won a staggering 49 trophies in management, including 13 Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues.

Reports claimed that Fergie was “seriously ill” and was taken to the Salford Royal hospital.

Here’s what we know so far:

Who is Sir Alex Ferguson?

Sir Alexander Chapman Ferguson is a Scottish former football player and legendary boss of Manchester United.

He was in charge of the Red Devils from 1986 until 2013.

Fergie guided United to 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles, during his 26 years in charge.

He began his playing career with Queen’s Park before going on to represent St Johnstone, Dunfermline, Rangers, Falkirk and Ayr United.

After hanging up his boots in 1974 he began his management career with East Stirlingshire before moving onto St Mirren for a four-year spell.

In 1978 Aberdeen appointed him as boss, and he led them to three titles and the Uefa Cup Winners’ Cup in 1983.

He answered the call of his country in 1985 following the death of Jock Stein and was in charge for the 1986 World Cup – although he gave up the role after the Tartan Army failed to get out of the group stage.

On November 6, 1986 he was appointed manager of Manchester United but it was not instant success for him at Old Trafford.

He survived huge pressure after several trophyless years by guiding the club to FA Cup success in 1989.

But the big moment came in 1993 when he managed to end their title-drought by winning the Premier League.

More and more joy followed over the years, including two Champions League wins in 1999 and 2008, before retiring from the dug-out in 2013.

He is the longest-serving manager in the club’s history.

A Manchester United statement said on Saturday: “Sir Alex Ferguson has undergone surgery today for a brain haemorrhage.

“The procedure has gone very well but he needs a period of intensive care to aid his recovery.

“His family request privacy in this matter. Everyone at Manchester United sends our very best wishes.”

Sir Alex Ferguson is 76-years-old.

He was born in Glasgow, Scotland.

His date of birth is December 31, 1941.

Who is Sir Alex Ferguson’s wife Cathy?

When Alex wanted to retire, his family convinced him to remain in charge of Manchester United, with Cathy listing her reasoning as “One, your health is good. Two, I’m not having you in the house. And three, you’re too young anyway.”

Ferguson went on to retire a few years later, saying his wife needed him after her sister died.

The couple married in 1966 and have three sons called Mark, Darren and Jason.

Darren is the manager of Doncaster Rovers but missed their League One clash with Wigan on Saturday to be by his father’s side.
