Roberto Martinez: If Belgium can become a team we can shine at the World Cup
LONDON -- Of all the teams that have never lifted a World Cup, Belgium look best placed to win their first in Russia. The country boasts a golden generation of players, led by Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard. Their main rival in the first-round group is England, which happens to be the country where Belgium's coach Roberto Martinez has spent almost his entire career in football. Martinez managed Swansea, Wigan and Everton before moving to Belgium in 2016 to take over the Red Devils. He lives just...

John Mikel Obi promises a switched on Super Eagles side
As Nigeria gear up for their opening game of the 2018 World Cup against Croatia on Saturday, captain John Mikel Obi has promised that the team will be switched on from the start - unlike in their warm-up games. Two miserable first half performances against England and Czech Republic largely contributed to losses to both teams that stirring second half fightbacks failed to overcome. But Mikel says the Super Eagles will not repeat the mistakes going forward: "I don't think we want to start from the...

Liverpool ready to push on Xherdan Shaqiri deal with Stoke when World Cup ends

Liverpool ready to push on Xherdan Shaqiri deal with Stoke when World Cup ends

LIVERPOOL are ready to step up their interest in signing Xherdan Shaqiri – once the World Cup finishes next month.

The Reds have shown an interest in signing the Stoke forward following the club’s relegation from the Premier League last season.

According top the Mirror, boss Jurgen Klopp has sounded out the Swiss international about the possibility of making a £12million move to Anfield and received encouraging feedback.

And it is claimed the club will step up their efforts to reach an agreement with Stoke when the tournament in Russia concludes.

But if Liverpool do press ahead with signing the 26-year-old winger, it will not be as an alternative to Lyon star Nabil Fekir.

The France international’s anticipated £57m move to Merseyside collapsed over the weekend amid criticism from the Lyon president.

Fekir, 24, was the man who was being targeted to fill the playmaker role in Klopp’s squad following the departure of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in January.

And though Shaqiri was the creative force in the Stoke side, he is not seen by Klopp as the major arrival Liverpool want to replace Coutinho.

It is almost certain the former Inter Milan star will be on his way out of the Bet365 Stadium over the course of the close season.

Manager Gary Rowett is aware several of his big names will be picked off this summer, with Shaqiri on of them.

It is understood the player has a relegation clause in his contract allowing him to leave for the same money Stoke paid Inter to sign him.

And at that price he is seen as a bargain by Liverpool to add to their attacking options, having proven himself in the Premier League over the past three years.

Other clubs have also shown an interest at that price, with both Southampton and Tottenham checking on his availability.

But it is Liverpool who appear to be at the head of the queue, once Swizterland’s involvement in Russia 2018 is over.

The Swiss are hopeful of making it through to at least the last-16 of the tournament, having been drawn in Group E along with Brazil, Serbia and Costa Rica.

Barcelona enter race with Liverpool and Arsenal ‘to sign £80m Monaco star Thomas Lemar’ if Antoine Griezmann stays at Atletico Madrid

BARCELONA are ready to battle Arsenal and Liverpool for the signing of Thomas Lemar, according to reports in Catalonia.

The La Liga champions are looking to bring in at least one big-name this summer, in a bid to wrestle the Champions League from Real Madrid’s grasp.

Antoine Griezmann looked a certainty to join from Atletico Madrid, but his future appears less clear, with recent reports suggesting he could stay put.

And Sport are now claiming that Barcelona have turned their attentions to Lemar, 22, and believe a bid of up to £80million would be enough to land him from Monaco.

The Catalans are still hopeful of concluding a deal for Griezmann, 27, though he has a huge offer on the table from the Rojiblancos, which they will not be able to match.

It is believed Atletico have promised him they will make the necessary signings to make the competitive — with Lemar actually one of the targets mentioned.

Arsenal and Liverpool were interested in the winger last summer, but failed to agree a deal with Monaco, meaning Alexis Sanchez and Philippe Coutinho respectively were forced to stay on until January.

Lemar’s form has dipped this season, with some claiming his head had been turned by the offers, and others insisting he missed the partnership with Benjamin Mendy down the left-hand side.

Sport also add that, he would likely play as a direct replacement for Andres Iniesta, with Coutinho being moved further forward.

Barcelona are also keeping tabs on Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen.

Barcelona’s pursuit of Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann could see them banned from signing players in next five transfer windows

Barcelona’s pursuit of Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann could see them banned from signing players in next five transfer windows

BARCELONA could face a two-and-a-half-year transfer ban following their pursuit of Antoine Griezmann.

The Spanish Double winners’ interest in the Frenchman is well-known, and it is understood a £100million deal is in place.

And, asked if there had been any contact, Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu recently admitted: “I haven’t spoken to him this year, but with his agent in October.”

Griezmann has a contract with Atletico until 2022.

And, according to Fifa’s regulations on the status and transfer of players: “A professional shall only be free to conclude a contract with another club if his contract with his present club has expired or is due to expire within six months.
“Any breach of this provision shall be subject to appropriate sanctions.”

Various reports in Spain suggest that, if found guilty, Barcelona could face a the prospect of being unable to sign players in any of the next three to five transfer windows.

Meanwhile, Griezmann could be banned from playing for up to six months.

There is precedent for this with Chelsea facing a sanction for their pursuit of Gael Kakuta in 2009 and Roma were found guilty of signing Philippe Mexes illegally from Auxerre in 2004.

On that occasion, the defender was banned and the Giallorossi had to pay the French side extra compensation.

Griezmann came close to leaving Atletico last summer, but performed a U-turn after the club were hit with a transfer ban of their own.

Should Barcelona be found guilty, this would be the second transfer ban handed to the Catalans in recent years.

Fifa decreed they would be unable to sign any players for the entirety of 2015 — the year in which they claimed the Treble — due to concerns over the “international transfer of minors”.

While the decision did not affect the club too much, it seriously hampered the careers of Aleix Vidal and Arda Turan who signed in the summer but were unable to play for six months.
